What is Mental Health?
A 2007 assertion from the World Wellbeing Association characterized emotional well-being as "a condition of harmony where every individual knows about their true capacity, ready to adapt to the usual and routine burdens of life, and ready to worthwhile work. Furthermore, can make a commitment to society." This shows how well the patient comprehends their psychological state and whether their life capabilities are disabled. It is a significant mark of psychological strength.
It can be seen that health is not only the absence of disease but also a balance of body and mind. Just imagine, a very healthy person cannot sleep well every day, is unhappy every day, or is socially isolated and has no friends. His life must be unstable and uneventful, and of course, it is not healthy.
Mental Health Awareness
Did you know that one in four adults suffer from a mental illness in a given year? That's about 62 million Americans. About 13.6 million people live with serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, major depression, or bipolar disorder.
These numbers are
staggering; however, the real staggering fact is that despite the number of
people living with mental illness, there is still a stigma attached to mental
illness that prevents people from getting treatment. C. S. Lewis wrote, “Mental
pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and more
difficult to bear.” The best way to get rid of the stigma behind a topic is to
educate yourself and others about the topic. Currently, only one in three
people with a mental illness receive treatment. Why is this? Partly because
people fear they will be treated differently if they are labeled as mentally
ill. People with mental illness may suffer from low self-esteem because their
thinking is that if no one finds them “normal,” then they are probably not
normal. Of course, those who have normal physical illnesses do not have people
who think they are abnormal.
Why should we pay attention to mental health and mental hygiene?
Mental health and
mental hygiene are important components of public health, as well as major
livelihood issues and prominent social issues. In recent years, mental health
and mental hygiene work has been included in the scope of comprehensively
deepening reform and comprehensive social governance. A national mental health
and mental hygiene prevention and treatment center has been established, and a
pilot project for the construction of a social psychological service system has
been carried out to explore social psychological service models and working
mechanisms covering the entire population. Mental health and mental hygiene
work is a systematic project that requires intensified efforts throughout the
entire process, including public awareness, basic education, social psychology,
patient treatment, community rehabilitation, service management, and assistance
and security, to meet the rapidly growing mental health and mental hygiene
needs of the people.
